Aunty Martha
I was raised in the 50s
My mother's best friend was her younger sister who lived 10mins away, Aunty Martha would walk down to my mother's house and they would sit and chat before they went shopping together.
My mother was a plain housewife but Martha was a barmaid and dressed like one with stilettos and jewelry, her hair was set and sometimes tinted pink or lilac, her makeup was heavy and her nails varnished and They would sit in the dining room chatting and Martha would leave lipstick stains on the teacups and cigarette ends.
Before they left they would use the toilet and I would hear Martha's heels clatter on the bathroom floor.
When they came downstairs to the living room my mam would adjust her slip and make to make her self decent and I probably got a glimpse of her plain stockings.
With Martha however it was an event. She wore ffs which were fine denier and near black, first she would reach down to her stilettos and aline the reinforced heel.
Then she'd move her hands slowly up her calf straightening the seam, then she would stop and raise the hem of her skirt and unclip the suspenders, she would roll the stcking down her thigh and then slowly ease it up her thigh ensuring the seam was dead straight. Once at full height she would attach the front stud before twisting her hip and reattaching the rear suspender stud before tightening the tension of the strap to full tension, then she would lower her skirt before going through the same process with the other leg ........
I was only 3 or 4 and all this was going on at eye level three feet in front of my nose and the two women payed no attention to the little boy who was spellbound and there was a warm cosy feeling in my tiny willy.
It was so exciting that I longed to try it and resisted the urge until I was about 9 and eventually couldn't wait any longer and snuck into the toilet with my sister's stockings and suspender belt, I wasn't disappointed and my heart was pounding and throat dry as I fastened and adjusted the studs. It's the most exciting thing I know and have loved repeating it for 60 years.
