Mom, the Vineyard and Me
Being a g****/raisin farmer's son means a lot of work if you are small farmers, the more you do with family, the better the bottom-line. Well, this day that meant doing some dreaded stoop labor...turning paper trays of almost dried raisins so the back side could finish drying. North and south running rows dry much slower than east west orientation...we just had a few acres of the north south to finish drying. Mom and I were instructed to turn a few rows behind our garage, about 90 minutes work while Dad and my Brother tended to about 2 acres on the end of our home ranch, about a full mornings' work. I mowed the lawn while waiting for Mom to finish her daily household chores. I was barefoot and shirtless with shorts working on a back-to-school tan. To my surprise Mom came out in an old dress of her making instead of her usual denim jeans and long-sleeved shirt.
The turning process was simple but timing was essential, when you flipped the tray of raisins to the empty one, you didn't want to spill any of the precious crop on the ground. I climbed the two steps in to the small dry compartment that had a bench barely wide enough for two and towel racks, a pair. Mom hurried back now with just a light robe on and brought me clean undies and towels. Light was very dim inside as clouds now covered the sun for a while. "Well, aren't you gonna take of your shorts," she asked. I stripped off and stepped onto the slated floor of the shower and reached up to turn on the water...now this was in the mid '60's before conservation became the rage and we were practicing, Save Water, Shower With Your Mom!
