I arrived in New York City. I had $3,000 in my purse and the city was mine.

I saw all the best Broadway shows. I stayed at the best hotel my money could afford and I settled back and took my own sweet time looking for a job and maybe a husband.

Well, three weeks in New York and someone broke into my hotel room and took the rest of my bankroll, about $2,400 worth.

That left me with just $500 to last me for a while. I had to find work, but because of the immigration laws I couldn't work.

One day my friend Rachel, who was also from over the pond, asked me if I wanted to make a lot of money very fast and I didn't have to work hard for it. It sounded too good to be true.
